Statement from the Foreign Ministry Spokesman, following the signing of the inter-Palestinian agreement on the forming of a Government of National Union

Algeria has welcomed with a great deal of satisfaction the signing by the leaders of the Palestinian
movements, Fatah and Hamas, of an agreement on the political programme and the forming of a
Government of National Union, It would like to pay tribute to the great sense of responsibility shown
by the Palestinian leaders involved. It would also like to pay a well-deserved tribute to the Guardian
of the Holy Sites and to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for the constructive role they played in this
 important and positive development.

Algeria shares in the joy shown by the Palestinian people and politicians at the announcement of the
signing of this agreement. It trusts that this long-awaited conclusion will remove once and for all the
threat of fraternal rifts and will reinforce Palestinian and Arab efforts to satisfy the inalienable
national rights of the Palestinian people, including the creation of its own independent state with Al
 Qods as its capital.

Algeria would like to emphasise the respect and the support which are due to the Government of
National Union as an expression of the sovereign will of the Palestinian people and the urgency of the
need to lift all sanctions which were imposed following the legislative elections.

In the context of the new situation and the promise that it holds in terms of the unity of positions and
the actions of all Palestinian institutions confronted with the demands of peace, Algeria is calling for
the speeding-up of the process for the implementation of the Road Map so that a move towards
peace could begin, resulting in the fair and long-0lasting solution to the Palestinian issue, which is
central to the Middle East conflict and to other pockets of tension and crises throughout the region.
